Curb chain & Accessories
The curb chain is used as a fulcrum for the leverage of dressage shanks and pelham bits. It exerts pressure on the lower jaw and also prevents the bit from tilting too far. It is of great importance that the chain is attached properly, not too tight and not too loose. When the chain is too tight, there is too much pressure on the lower jaw, and the horse often moves less freely through the body to avoid the pressure. When the chain is too loose, the bit can flip over and the connection with the horse's mouth is disrupted. The curb chain is positioned correctly when the shanks of the bit form a 45-degree angle with the commissure of the mouth when the reins are tightened.
A curb chain is attached to the bit using curb chain hooks, which are available in various shapes and sizes. For added comfort, a curb chain guard can be chosen. Because a horse's lower jaw is very sensitive and delicate, it is always advisable to ride with a guard. The guards come in different materials, such as leather, gel, and rubber. The suitable choice of material varies from horse to horse. Leather guards should be kept clean and can be smeared with butter to prevent drying out. A gel guard is extra soft and suitable for very sensitive horses.
