Correction bit

There are various correction bits on the market, all with their own purpose and fit. Most correction mouthpieces aim to discourage strong horses from grabbing the bit. Below, we will take you through some correction bits and the issues they address, as well as how the bit contributes to a solution. Most of these bits and mouthpieces are not FEI-approved and are often not allowed for use in competitions. These bits are only meant to correct the horse and teach different behavior, assuming that this can be phased out after a period. A correction bit is not a long-term solution.

A correction bit with a double mouthpiece is recommended for horses with a hard but non-pulling mouth. The asymmetrical breaking point has a relaxing effect on the horse and ensures that they are less encouraged to grab the bit. This bit with a double mouthpiece comes in smooth metal or with a twisted mouthpiece.

A chifney, also known as a stallion bit, is designed for horses that are difficult to lead by hand. It features a thin metal circular mouthpiece over the tongue and behind the horse's chin. The bit is attached to a loose cheekpiece, and the lead rope is connected to the ring at the back.

A Dexter ring bit is a combination of a chifney (stallion bit) and a basic snaffle. The snaffle is usually a standard single-jointed bit, made of various materials. The Dexter ring encloses the lower jaw and is connected to the rings of the snaffle. When the reins are picked up, the ring applies leverage to the horse's jaw. This bit is only suitable for very strong horses.
