Unjointed
An unjointed mouthpiece consists of one piece and provides even pressure on the tongue, bars, and lips. The shape and thickness of the mouthpiece determine where the pressure is applied in the horse's mouth. For instance, you can choose an unjointed bit with an arch, which applies more pressure on the bars while keeping the tongue free. For horses with a thick or large tongue, an arched mouthpiece can be very comfortable. Since the unjointed mouthpiece has no hinge points, it lies stable on the jaw, corners of the mouth, and tongue. There is never any pressure on the palate. This bit is suitable for sensitive horses that cannot tolerate movement of the bit in the mouth, strong horses, or horses that require stability.
An unjointed mouthpiece is often confused with a curb bit. A curb bit always has a leverage effect, while the unjointed snaffle has no leverage effect. Therefore, an unjointed snaffle is not necessarily harsher. Depending on the material, thickness, and the influence of the rider's hand, the unjointed mouthpiece can be gentler or less gentle. Also, for horses with a sensitive mouth, an unjointed snaffle can be a good addition because it distributes pressure optimally.
The unjointed mouthpiece is commonly used in the equestrian sport as a basic bit because it is suitable for many horses and riders. The mouthpiece is especially suitable for horses that benefit from a stable bit with a more even pressure distribution and no pressure on the palate. In general, both young and trained horses accept the mouthpiece well. Finding the right bit depends on the preference of the horse and rider. At HorseOnline, you can test the bit before buying. An unjointed mouthpiece is FEI-approved and can be used for both jumping and dressage competitions.
