Swales Bit
A swales bit has the effect of a double bridle, but is less complicated. The loose rings over the mouthpiece emphasize the leverage.
The strength of the impact is determined by the type of mouthpiece and the length of the shanks.

A Swales bit is also known as a Pluko bit and has the effect of a curb and snaffle, but consists of one bit and is less complicated. The Swales bit also resembles a Pelham bit, but the horse does not feel pressure on the poll because there is no pressure on the cheekpieces of the bridle. It is the only bit with a lever action that does not exert pressure behind the ears. The Swales bit has loose, movable rings over the mouthpiece for attaching the cheekpieces. When the rider increases pressure on these loose, movable rings, pressure is applied only to the lower jaw, not behind the ears. Only by taking the rein on the shank does the lever action come into play. The longer the shank, the greater the lever action.
The Swales 3-in-1 Pelham provides more leverage than a traditional Pelham and is used in combination with a curb chain or curb strap. The Swales 3-in-1 Pelham is designed to provide control for strong horses that tend to lean on the bit. A Swales bit can be used with 2 reins, one rein on the loose ring for a soft contact, and the other rein on the lower ring of the shank for the leverage effect, or with one rein using a connecting strap (bridge).
The Swales bit is often used in equestrian sports by professionals. It is a side piece that must be used with care. The Swales bit has a lever action, making it suitable only for horses that are strong in the hand. The horse should have a stable foundation before being ridden with a Swales bit. At HorseOnline, you can test the bit before purchasing. A Swales bit is FEI-approved but may only be used for show jumping in competitions.
