D-Bit

A D-ring snaffle is a standard bit with D-rings and lies calm and stable in the mouth. The pressure of the D-shape against the cheek facilitates manoeuvrability. Depending on the type, thickness and material, a D-bit gets a sharper or softer effect.

D-ring snaffle

The sidepieces of a D-ring snaffle, as the name suggests, have the shape of a "D." This D-shape provides stability in the horse's mouth and cannot be easily pulled through the mouth. The shape also creates more pressure on the horse's cheeks. This can be beneficial for turning the horse, as it receives extra support from the pressure on the cheeks. Especially for young horses, this can be a solution.

Due to this D-shape, more pressure is obtained on the horse's cheeks, which facilitates agility. The rings cannot move independently from the mouthpiece, allowing your aids to act directly. Depending on the type, thickness, and material, a D-ring snaffle can have a sharper or softer effect. Because the rings cannot move independently from the mouthpiece, bit guards are not needed. The sidepieces of a D-ring snaffle should fit reasonably snugly on the horse's mouth, as these rings do not slide or rotate.

The D-ring snaffle is often used in sports as a basic bit because it is suitable for many horses and riders. The sidepiece is typically used for young horses in the early stages of training who are still seeking a stable contact. A D-ring snaffle is generally accepted by both young and trained horses. Finding the right bit depends on the combination of the horse and rider, based on your riding style. At HorseOnline, you can test the bit before purchasing. A D-ring snaffle is FEI-approved and can be used for both jumping and dressage competitions.
