Gag Bit

A gag bit is used with gag cheek pieces that go through the rings of the bit and has a ring at the bottom to which the rein is attached.
Taking the reins pushes the bit up into the mouth and puts pressure behind the ears.

Gag Bit

A gag bit is used in combination with cheekpieces for an elevator bridle that passes through the rings of the bit and is attached to the headpiece of the bridle. At the bottom of this elevator strap, there is a ring where the rein is attached. When the reins are taken up, the bit slides up in the mouth and creates pressure behind the ears. The elevator bit is intended to encourage the horse to raise its head and is often used for horses that want to take too much contact and end up "hanging" and running behind the bit. An elevator bit can be used with 1 or 2 reins.

The gag bit has a lever action. Therefore, it should be handled with care. When the rein is attached to the little ring of the strap, the bit has a reasonably strong action. The sidepiece is therefore only suitable for horses that accept the bit well and do not evade the pressure of a basic bit.

A gag bit is often used in sports by professionals. It is a bit that should be used with care. The bit has a lever effect, making it suitable only for horses that are strong in the hand. The horse should have a stable foundation before being ridden with an elevator bit. At HorseOnline, you can test the bit before purchasing. An elevator bit is FEI-approved but may only be used for showjumping in competitions.
